Square Enix has just revealed a bit more info on the RPG mode in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, their upcoming PSP beat-'em-up sequel. We already know that there's an "RPG mode" of sorts when it comes to the controls -- you can enter menu-based commands in battle if you like, letting the computer control your character's movements -- but the story mode itself sounds like it'll be quite a bit more full-featured than the 2D affair seen in the previous game.

According to the latest Japanese game-mag previews, Dissidia 012's RPG section will have a full-on story, with its own event cutscenes and its own game world for you to travel around. You'll form a party consisting of several characters -- either defined by the computer or of your own choice, depending on where you are in the story. There aren't explorable towns per se, but there are shops to purchase character upgrades in.

Battle encounters in the RPG bit are symbol-based, and once you bump into a symbol, you'll be whisked away to a battle map where the fight begins. (Among the new maps revealed this week: one modeled after the Crystal Tower in Final Fantasy III.)
