Folks who have a strong dislike of advertisements will probably turn red at this. It has been confirmed that the right column that Gmail usually reserves for ads has now been updated to support image-based advertising, as opposed to the original text-only ads. The trial seems to be ongoing on a limited basis, which is probably why there hasn't been a serious backlash yet. The statement from Google reads:
"We're always trying out new ad formats and placements in Gmail, and we recently started experimenting with image ads on messages with heavy image content."
