Microsoft Cautions Against Windows Phone 7 Jailbreak

After a Windows Phone 7 jailbreak solution was released under the title of ChevronWP7, Microsoft issued caution to users who may be tempted to tackle the jailbreak, warning of potential instabilities.

"Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable."

Since Microsoft has taken the route that Apple has done with Windows Phone 7 and only allowing approved apps from Windows Phone Marketplace to be installed on Windows Phone 7 devices, the jailbreak would allow for home-brewed solutions to be installable on Windows Phone 7 without having to go through Marketplace. A side effect of this, and a concern for Microsoft and developers, would be the installation of pirated apps onto the phone. According to makers of ChevronWP7, the tool is meant to "allow the sideloading of experimental applications that would otherwise can't be published to the Marketplace."
